I have one similar, and the batteries go under the little keyboard looking thing on the left side. The part with the blue, green, and yellow with three pink things on top? That should pop out (with a little difficulty), and then have screws under it. That's where the batteries go on mine.

What is the best way to clean the Baby Einstein play mat?

I have a different Baby Einstein gym but it's basically the same thing. as long as The mat and toys are soft (Mat is like a blanket and toys are like stuffed animals) they can be washed in a washing machine with Baby soap (Ivory snow or Purex baby) I put my mat in the dryer but let the toys hang dry for 24hrs.

I had the same problem...call baby einstein customer service 1-800-328-0885 ext: 5 , they'll connect you to kids II- the company that manufactures the product for them and they should send you a replacement!!
