probably your led panel went dead. check it in bright light if there's moving picture behind which means your back light get busted. try to connect it to external monitor to double check
Try connecting an external monitor to the 15 VGA (video) plug on the laptop and see if it displays properly on the monitor. You may have to direct the video from the laptop to the monitor by holding down the blue <FN> (key next to the space bar) and then press down the <F8> key. If the display on the external monitor is correct, then you either have a problem with the laptop's LED display screen or cable that connects the LED to system board. Here is a link for the service manual: ftp://ftp.dell.com/Manuals/all-products/esuprt_laptop/esuprt_inspiron_laptop/inspiron-9300_service%20manual_en-us.pdf
First thinkg I'd do is to connect an external monitor to the laptop to see if you can get an image, any image, during booting. If you can't see anything, either using the laptop's screen or external monitor, then you have a hardware failure in the laptop that's probably beyond the abilities of a novice to repair. Get somebody who knows about how to clear the CMOS of the laptop.
try to connect your laptop to an external monitor. if it displays on the external monitor, then your screen is bad. if it won't show up on the external monitor, then your video card might be bad. here is another idea, i don't know if its true or not, i saw a link on the internet, where is says to take out your RAM and clean it very good then put it back in and try out your laptop... hope this helps
Try connecting an external monitor and see if your see anything. If you can then most likely your LCD monitor on the laptop is dead. Also try FN+ the monitor toggle key to see if you can get video.
You need to determine the fault first.
Can you determine exactly where the boom came from (the adapter or laptop)?
When you turn on your laptop does the LED lights indicating that there is power to the laptop and you can hear the hard drive spinning as well as the fan?
Do you know the power adapter is OK (you can test it with a multimeter)?
If the laptop is dead then the external monitor is of no use.
The laptop normally has a blue video output connector, usually on the back edge of the laptop where you can connect an external monitor or a data projector. When a monitor or projector is powered up first and then the laptop the display goes to the external video first. You can switch between the laptop screen and external video by clicking the blue Fn + F4 function keys.
I have had this before with my Dell Latitude C540/640. I don't know the ACER 5720 but here's a couple possible fixes for you.
1. Press the function key ( "fn" key, generally a blue key or blue lettering and usually in the bottom left corner of your keyboard) and press F8 (may be a different key on your laptop, again, not familure with the acer. The key usually has either CRT/LCD printed on it, or two monitors on it, one its just an outline of a monitor and the other is filled in. This will run you laptop through the three monitor options it has. (LCD - LCD & External - Just External)
2. Try closing and opening the lid of your laptop. Sounds a bit strange but it works sometimes for me. My guess is when you close you screen it would "dim/turn off" the LCD and re-opening it convinces it to turn the screen back on.
One way to test it is to connect a monitor to the VGA port (make sure to activate the external monitor (Fn+monitor key)
If it does work on the external monitor, I would look at replacing the onboard LCD.
If it doesn't, you are looking at problems with the onbaord video.
