Question about Computers & Internet

I am assuming by the category title that you are asking about an activation key for an Operating System. An Activation Key is something like a serial number. The OS manufacturer provides the activation key to provide copyright protection and prevent software piracy. Each key can only be used one (or as often as the OS manufacturer allows). Until you enter the key, the software is not considered activated. This may, depending upon the software, have restrictions. For example, Windows gives you 30 days to activate Windows OS. After that, it essentially shuts down, restricting use to very limited activities until the activation key is obtained and entered.
