It just stopped feeding the material through while I was sewing, It had been working ok until it suddenly stopped feeding

By saying the tension of the foot is good I take it you mean the pressure is set good. Maybe add more pressure. Are you sure that the lever on the bottom right is set for sewing and not darning which raises the needle plate above the feeddogs? Sure that your feed dogs are moving well at the stitch length set. With slippery fabrics you may need to try a different type of foot. There are some plastic or teflon coated ones that will not stick to or hold the material back. Or try a Walking Foot or Even Feed foot which will move the top of the fabric evenly with the bottom.
They do help alot.
Good luck

Knowing which kind of machine you have helps alot. Just guessing but maybe the reverse mechanism is stuck and needs some oil in it to free it up. Or the buttonhole mechanism is stuck in reverse part of it.
Probably you should have it looked at.

Remove the needle plate and clean the feed dogs there could be fluff gathering.
Check your needle is not damaged.
Re: Reverse feed dogs on Singer 4423 Remove extension table so you can see switch on BACK of machine @ left side. Flip switch to raise feed dogs up. If machine actually sewing in reverse - check n Buttonhole adjustment. Reset it (located bottom right side machine) Jimmy

the machine needs to be checked when the feeddogs don't move
but first check to see if the feeddogs are in the up position & if the
feeddogs are up, then the machine needs to be checked
