Had a similar problem about a year ago., and discovered that the jack on the power cord had split at the seam and the contacts were not touching the unit consistently. A little bit of super glue to glue the halves of the plug together solved the problem.

It sounds as if a small amount of water or moisture has entered the GPS.
The 2730 is now a discontinued product, and if bought new, is likely out of warranty. If purchased recently (less than a year) as a factory refurbished device, it would normally be covered under a Garmin Factory warranty. Water damage however, may not be covered.
If it is no longer covered, Garmin offers a "flat rate" repair for $170. Learn how to go about obtaining this service at the site below:
A couple things come to mind... at $170, to me - it doesn't seem to make much sense to repair, when "like new" factory refurbished GPS units can be had for the same / less money. The refurbs come with 1 year warranties (instead of a 90 day type after repair) & latest version of maps.
Lastly, if you don't want to do either of the suggestions above, you could attempt removing the back cover and allowing the device to fully dry out in direct sunlight for a day or two. Reassemble and operate the GPS again. Doing this sooner rather than later will increase the chances of successful drying with having permanent water damage.
This has happened to me also, therefore I never start the location I am going to untill I am in the car ready to go,I turned the unit off, then on and went to my favourites and touched my location again, worked for me,good luck.I keep all the locations I am going to now or in the future in favourites, saves time.
Turn the unit off, then hold down
the menu and map buttons, simultaneously, then turn the unit back on
and continue to hold down the buttons down for at least five more
seconds, then the unit will power up. At that point it's like the unit
is being used for the first time and you will have to reset everything.
You will lose your XM presets, but the MP3's were still there.
Also after if this does not work, plug in your
garmin and mount it, mac or pc whatever, then go in your garmin file
erase all maps should be gmapsupp.img or gmapprom.img. Reload your maps
Unfortunately, Fixya is not associated with Garmin. We can only answer device questions and can't speak for the company.
Unfortunately, the unit cannot be upgraded. Garmin provides both in and out of warranty repair service if the unit is having a problem. The 2720 sells for $49 on Amazon, so it probably is not worth your while to have fixed.
The 2720 is known to have issues unfortunately, it is pretty lowly rated on Amazon.
What model is it? If you have a 2720 or 2730, and the original DVD with unlock code, run that on your PC. When asked, enter the unlock code into the program. Select all the maps by dragging the mouse across all of the US (hold down the left mouse botton). All the highlighted should turn "pink". Once selected, click on SEND TO UNIT and wait. This process can take some time. Once there, you shouldn't have a problem.
