GIMP will not open up

I have used GIMP for about 1 and a half weeks now and it has been working just fine. We were just assigned a project where we used the filters. It kept crashing and I have had to restart it multiple times. I kept saying "(Not Responding)" and would fade a little bit and then would force exit. The last time I tried to open it, it started loading about 2/3 of the way, when it came to loading the fonts and then it stopped and came up with something saying "A problem has caused this program stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available. This happens every time I try to open a xcf file or GIMP. I have restrted my computer multiple times and I uninstalled it and reinstalled it, but the same problem is still happening. I don't know how to fix it and I need to submit the project. If someone could help that would be great!

SOURCE: Gimp install

Hi there. Common error. Just uninstall GIMP, re-boot and then reinstall only from www.gimp.com (nowhere else). That should do it.

SOURCE: it keeps shutting down.

First of all, make sure you have enough ram (I know, it sounds stupid, but you'd be surprised). Also, you should uninstall GIMP, reboot and reinstall it ONLY FROM gimp.org! Nowhere else. This is a common problem and happens to all of us from time to time. You can find additional help at:

My flash drive does not show up on my computer and the red light won't stop blinking.

I had the same problem for weeks and I couldn't figure out why it would work on my personal laptop but not my work PC.

My problem was that the Flash drive was using "H:" as the drive letter and I already had "H:" assigned to a network share. The computer obviously recognized it because it appeared in the Disk Management, but it was assigned to H: and the PC already had "H:" connected to my share. I could have just changed the drive assignment for the flash drive to another letter and restart the PC as previously mentioned but I was in the middle of working on something and restarting my PC wasn't the best thing to do at the time. I decided to try to disconnect my "H:" network share and reconnect it using a different drive letter ("J:" in my case). After doing that I reconnected the flash drive and it opened fine under "H:"

Just another option to look into.

Not detecting saved files

Puzzling. The "real" answer probably has to do with the location to which the file is saved, the command used to save the file, and the file type. That said, I would first try locating the file using the freeware application Everything (allowing it time to index the files on the C drive). It should reveal the location of the file which you should take not of. And it will tell you the file type. You should be able to drag and drop the located file into the opened Gimp application. That event should confirm that Gimp can read the saved files (and that such are not corrupted.) Gimp may simply be configured to not look in the directory where it is saving files but rather to another location.

Gimp by default saves pictures in a file format unlikely viewable by other picture displaying programs. This forces a user to export it to more standard file types via the use of Gimp plugins. And Gimp can import files as well. This is discussed in the link below:

How do I upload picture to gimp?

GIMP is a program saved on your computer, you don't need to upload an image, but to simply open an image using GIMP. There are two ways to accomplish this:

File Browser
While viewing your files, right-click on your image, and place the mouse over "Open With". This will bring up a new menu, from which you select "GIMP Image Editor". If GIMP is not an option, select "Other Application". This will bring up a list of applications for you to choose from. Scroll down until you see "GIMP Image Editor", select it, then click "Open".

From GIMP
The second method is by running GIMP first, then clicking "File", then "Open". From there, find your image, select it, and then click "Open".

I can be more specific or provide screenshots if necessary. Hope this helped!

It won't allow me to use certain features

This is a common problem. Make sure you have the latest GIMP version (2.6.6). Uninstall gimp, reboot and then reinstall gimp ONLY from www.gimp.org. This should solve the problem.
