Why does the Drum spin erratic even without clothes in it?

might be a warped spin basket or the dampers could need to be replaced. could even be a bad spin bearing. if it was bearing, normally would be associated with a loud noise during the spin cycle though.

Kenmore washer model #417.42042100 is not spinning the clothes all the way.

First you need to open the cabinet and remove the boot from the tub to the pump and clear the filter. Try that then run a cycle and post back the results.

Dosen't spin with clothes in. works well without clothes

What you have is a bad thrust bearing. The main drive pulley and assorted washers act to release the brake in the spin mode. In the wash mode the tub must be locked down or the clothes would wrap around the agitaor and knot up real bad. The motor turns in the oposite direction to spin and when it foes a cam riser in the main puley releases the brake package and pumps out while spinning. I have a detailed repair sequence with photos, manual, and directions HERE

How can I get my washing machine to spin and empty with bad timer

Emptying the tub is easy, just lower the drain hose into a bucket on the floor, or into a floor drain. If the timer can be operated manually, turn it to spin, then drain after spinning a while. If this is an electronic timer, you will need to remove the clothes and take to a laundromat or a friend's house to spin the water out.

CLOTHES STILL WET AFTER SPIN CYCLE

Dear dgloss1856, Sun 4-12-2009 1:14PM EST USA

Washers will shut down automatically without completing the spin cycle for two reasons.
1) Too many clothes in the washer at once (overloading with clothes) !
2) Too much soap in the washer when washing!

When this happens you should restart the machine in the spin cycle or if you can't start in spin run a full cycle without adding soap.

If this doesn't solve the problem you may need to clean the timer or control circuits depending on your machine by cleaning with electronic spray cleaner (available at Radio Shack) by spraying the timer or control circuits as instructed on the can of electronic cleaner.

Clothes are still soaking wet after spin cycle

But is the washer empty, if there is still some water in it, there could be something in the drain line,
if all the water is gone, then it sounds like the washer is not reaching the full speed of the spin cycle.

Unless someone can remove the drain line and check the pump, and check the clutch of the machine,
I am sorry to say you should call an appliance person and have them make a service call.

If you where to post the model # of the washer, someone could look at the manual of it and see
how the washer works and what the pump is. I hope it is a simple fix for you.

Doesn't spin the clothes dry on the final spin but spins at high revolutions without a load of clothes

I have read that if the pump is not draining the tub completely, there is an interlock that prevents the high speed spin from engagin. I have had debris caught in my pump several times (kids!!) with similar issues. There is a trap on the line leading from the tub to the pump which is "supposed" to capture debris, but it doesn't work all that well. Check your pump.....
