The Action Center reports that this computer is not protected by an antivirus program.

You can download microsoft security essentials if your on windows 7 its free,if your on windows 8 you can download avast and that is also free for home use and is a good anti virus thats what i have been using for a few years now.

There are a few companies offering free anti Virus software. You could try AVG-Free which is a well known Anti-Virus software, just go to http://free.avg.com/us-en/download-free-antivirus hope this helps, best of luck.

Require to install an Antivirus application on your Computer (ex: McAfee, symantic, etc) and next update it from website for latest version.

Once it updated, Open antivirus console(Wizard) - Select On-Demand Scan option - select All Drives and files you required....

It will take few minutes.. (it lists virus detected - if it not critical file). In Action you can select apropriate action (Delete or protect it from infecting other files). Also you can select auto action for the same.

What OS and what Anti Virus program are you running?
The OS will recognize some AV products and not others. You can tell the Operating system you will monitor the Anti-Virus software yourself.

This can be caused by a computer virus that prevents a program from unpacking... you may need to have a better antivirus like kaspersky Internet Security 2009, norton antivirus 2009....

Remember not all antivirus can detect virus... some virus can destroy your pc... especially the hard disk...

want to turn on Auto-Protect permanently

AVG free edition should do the trick, but the safest way to get rid of a virus is reformatting your hard drive.
