You don't need the common for the thermostat unless you are installing a thermostat that doesn't take batteries and gets its power from the hot and needs the common to complete the circuit.

My goodman ac unit. M#g8x130301bd comes on with the thermostat turned off when i turn thermostat to cool the fan on the air handler wont come on

Incorrect low voltage wiring, or if the wiring is old, most likely a break in the insulation of the wiring creating a short.
First thing, check the wiring diagram to see that all wire colors are attached where they should be at the thermostat.
Then look at the wiring diagram at the air handler and verify the control wires are on the proper terminals.

WIRING THE THERMOSTAT TO AC UNIT THEN FROM THE UNIT TO HANDLER

Generally, you would go from the thermostat to the air handler, and then, from the air handler to the outdoor unit. I don't know if you have a heat pump or not, so I will give you a simple diagram and you can contact me if you need more.

Thermostat : Y G R W and sometimes C
Air handler: Y G R W and C
Outdoor unit: two wires connecting to the contactor ( not heat pump)

Thermostat; Y--------------Y(air handler cooling)------------------one side of contactor, outdoor unit
G-------------G (air handler, fan)
R--------------R (air handler ,hot)
W-------------W (air handler, heat)
C--------------C (air handler, common)------------other side of contactor, outdoor unit

This is a typical wiring diagram. Just contact me if you have something different. Hope this helps. Stay cool. mark

Wiring a h/p thermostat

When dealing with the low voltage wiring, the color of the wire means nothing.

You will need to go to your air handler and determine which wires are hooked up in the unit and then correspond the same wires on the thermostat.

Wire colors are only going to help the person that originally did the wiring. For Example, I use black for common whereas others may use blue.

Wiring Diagram for Ruud Heat Pump

Unfortunately, the wiring diagrams for heat pumps are not so easy to come up with. The outdoor unit will have its own diagram, but may not include the indoor air handler and will probably not include the thermostat. That said, the orange wire is commonly run from the thermostat to the reversing valve in the outdoor unit. This wire is usually not connected to the indoor airhandler. The orange wire is usually used in a unit that has the reversing valve energized in cool. Ruud, however has its reversing valve energized in heat. Probably not useful but maybe helpful
