Malfunction 8 on the Franke Flair indicates fault possibly with the follows:
1. The o-rings of the brewing unit (There are two o-rings. The brewing unit is completely mechanical, no electrical component in it.).
1. The geared motor of the brewing unit (Check this if the motor runs only in one direction and keeps over running).
2. The encoder connected to the geared motor, which signals the current position of the brewing unit piston. The encoder is cheaper than the geared motor (Check this if the motor runs only in one direction and keeps over running).
3. The control boards (There are two control boards. Control boards are among the most expensive components in Franke Flair).

It won't start up, keeps saying Malfunction 8

Check your owners manual? Or I'd just check everything. I see you have beans in there, but did you forget the water? I don't know how your machine works, but usually "malfunction" is a warning to tell you that it can't make coffee because of something the human did/did not do.

There's also a great website which has a very informative forum to ask your question there.

I can empathize. Hope this helps.

Malfunction 8 On Screen

Likely cause of this is a blocked worm drive. The worm drive takes the coffee in and then, after brewing, ejects the used grounds into the Dump box. Over time, coffee grounds accumulate on the worm drive and eventually jam it. This is Malfunction 8. Machine will need to be stripped and cleaned. Hope this helps.

Malfunction 8, intermittent Sometimes the brewer seems to be straining, then up comes the malfunction 8 message. I think the brewer needs a good clean and lubricating, possibly the seals are in need of...

You're right about the straining bit. It's a jammed worm drive. Usually Malfunction 8 is preceeded by painful noises and sometimes even though the machine sounds like it's brewing, all the coffee ends up in the drip tray instead of the cup! The machine will need stripping, the worm drive cleaned off and lubricated and then reassembled. It's about an hour's job. Hope this helps.
