Make sure that what you are printing from the PC is black. This sounds so trite, but if for some reason you have set the font to white you may be able to see what you have written on the screen - but it won't print. Another possibility is that somehow the print in the document has been set to 'hidden'. That doesn't help either.

Failing that you may have to reinstall the printer. Use the printer disc to do this.

Have tried printing from computer and tried printing test page from printer. both times the pages come out blank.. how do I check the toner levels in printer. thank you

The draw back of inkjet technology printers are, if it is not using quite long period of time, cartridge nozzles will dry up, result printer will act just like a printing some thing but nothing will come on paper(blank page) even ink levels are showing full.
Try to recover the both cartridges through 'clean print cartridge' process from the system,if not better consult cartridge re-filler to clean the nozzles..Replace new cartridges if above said methods are not worked out.

My hp deskjet 6940 inkjet printer doesn't show me level of ink in cartridge

Print a diagnostic page If the steps above have not helped, print and evaluate a diagnostic page to see if the cartridges or the printer is causing the problem.
  1. Make sure the printer is on and loaded with unused, plain, white paper.
  2. Press and hold the Power button and then press the Cancel button. Release both buttons. The diagnostic page prints. Figure 1: Power and Cancel buttonsc00584735.gif 1 - Cancel button 2 - Power button
Step 4: Note which cartridges printed which areas of the diagnostic page You must identify which cartridge printed which part of the diagnostic page, so that if you find defects on the page, you will know which cartridge is the problem. However, you can install different combinations of print cartridges in your printer, and different cartridge combinations print different diagnostic page patterns. Your diagnostic page may not look exactly like the picture below, but the right and left cartridges will print in the same areas of the page no matter which cartridges are installed. Figure 2: Diagnostic page layout (the patterns in each area may look slightly different on your page)c00584715.gif 1 - Printed by the right cartridge 2 - Printed by the left cartridge NOTE: If you are printing in reserve mode (one cartridge is missing), the missing cartridge's area of the diagnostic page will be blank. Step 5: Check ink levels NOTE: If you have installed a refilled or remanufactured ink cartridge, or a cartridge that has been used in another product, the ink level indicator is inaccurate or unavailable. Look in the middle of the diagnostic page. The bars with "E" (for "empty") and "F" (for "full") at each end show the ink levels in the cartridges. As ink is used, the solid color changes to a faded color. Reading no paper paper tray is full

Instructions
  1. Check the display for an error message. If the display reads "Clearing paper from printer," the engine has detected a jam and is attempting to eject the jammed pages automatically. These pages will often be blank.
  2. Check the display for "Performing PRINT/STOP TEST" or "Performing SERVICE TEST." Either of these messages indicates that the printer is going through a test procedure that may eject blank pages.
  3. Reduce the amount of paper in the input tray if the printer is feeding multiple blank sheets at a time. The printer will pull extra pages through if the input tray is overfilled.
  4. Replace the paper in the input tray with the correct size if needed. If the 4600 printer detects the paper as an incorrect size for the print job, it may eject the paper without printing anything on it.
  5. Replace the ink cartridges if certain colors are blank on the page. Replace the black cartridge if printing a black text document that is coming out blank. The printer may attempt to print even if the ink level is low or empty, but will unable to print anything on the page, causing it to come out blank.
  6. Remove the sealing tape from newly installed cartridges. The tape covers the print heads and should be removed before installing the cartridges. If the tape is left on, it will prevent ink from getting on the pages as they print.
  7. Press the "Check mark" button on the control panel to enter the printer menu. Run a diagnostic so the printer can attempt to determine the cause of the blank pages printing. Press the up or down arrow to select "Diagnostics." Press the "Check mark" button. Press the "Down" arrow to highlight "PQ Troubleshooting." Press the "Check mark" button. The printer runs a diagnostic and returns to a ready state when done.
