It sounds like a maintenance issue with your heat pump, its clear that the unit is trying to run but one of the safeties is shutting it down trying to protect itself. most heat pumps are equipt with a High press lockout usually a manual reset ,a low press, cut out switch resets on rise of press automatically. Causes of LPCO Extremely dirty condenser coil or evaporator coil, Loss of fan on condenser, Low refrigerant charge. A competent Service man should be able to locate and correct this problem. A seasonal check up on the unit avoids these problems.

My heat pump has a problem heating when it is very cold. should i cut the emerg. heat on?

The emergency heat setting on the heat pump thermostat is manually selected by the equipment owner. This is usually in response to a malfunction in the outdoor unit. Doing so locks out the outdoor unit. The indoor auxiliary heating system must provide the heat required. Setting the thermostat to the heat position allows the outdoor unit to operate. Due to the expense of electric resistance heating compared to the efficiency of the heat pump, repairs should be made as soon as possible.

Problem is water keeps leeking out the waste pipe no matter what cycle you have it on

This is most likley condensation water from the coils. If you live in a damp climet you can get a lot. If you check the PH of this water and it matches the pool you have a problem. If it is very low then it is just conden sation.

My heat pump is shot and is operating off the emergency heat. Can I just continue to use it this way or do I have to replace the heat pump?

You mean you are using the Emergency heat setting instead of the heat pump????...You're using Natural gas only now tn emergency heat????That's fine...I wouldn't replace a heat pump if you have Natural gas....it's too expensive compared to Gas....you may be able to still use the heat pump as an Air Conditioner only , it depends on what's wrong with it...otherwise you will have to get a Central Air unit instead...cheaper and just use the Gas for heat

EM HEAT.... does it stand for ECONOMY HEAT or EMERGENCY HEAT? They both conflict. Someone's misinformed.

It stands for Emergency Heat. (Back up heat) . Normally you will find it on heat pumps. It's used manually when the compressor goes out on a heat pump. It's used automatically by the unit when it's so cold outside the heat pump can't keep up. This happens when there is not enough heat in the air to draw heat from. This happens at around 23 degrees. I hope this explains what emergency heat is and what it's used for.

Ruud Heat Pump blows room temp on Heat and AC setting

A "Heat-Pump" is also known as a reverse cycle air conditioner, this means on heat the outdoor unit acts like the indoor section and vice versa. So in all probability you need to have it leak checked and recharged.

Intertherm central unit heating side not working right

I am assuming this is a heat pump? (Typical when the t-stat has a green light.).

Please confirm

If a heat pump, is the outdoor unit frozen up? There can be some frosting, but it should not be a block of ice.

If there is an emergency heat switch on the t-stat, can you flip that to emergency heat? Do you get heat then?

Pleas advise and I can help you troubleshoot this problem further.

Ruud heat pump question

Does the air handler take a minute or two to start, this would be normal so that it doesn't blow cool air into the house before the unit is warmed up. If not could be the fan relay is weak and needs replacing. As far as the outside unit it sounds like you need to check the refrigerant. In cooling they are 70/150 psi. This should be checked in cooling mode, once you turn it to heating mode the pressures switch bring heat inside the house instead of out. I hope this helps.
