Is your sim too big, or to small?
When to big, visit a phone shop and ask them to trim the card. The have special tools to do this, without damaging the vital parts in the sim.
If it is too small, check the box where your sim came in, because modern sim cards com in 3 sizes. You can put the frame around the small sim, so it fits in your phone.

10mm nuts are 40 foot pounds. 8mm nuts are 18 foot pounds. You need to torque all the nuts to 10 foot pounds to start, then torque the 10mm nuts to 20 foot pounds, then 30 foot pounds, and then 40 foot pounds. Retorque all the 10 mm nuts to 40 foot pounds and then retorque the 8mm nuts to 18 foot pounds. Torque the bolts in a criss-cross pattern.

Deregistration
I'm not sure exactly what you're trying to do, but here's the rundown of what I can get from your post.
To register (assuming the phone is not currently registered): place the phone in the main base cradle.  It should automatically register itself to the base.
To unregister:  I can't tell you exactly how to do this because I don't have my phone sitting infront of me, but I know that it is in the main menu on the phone.
Using the end call/pound key: Pressing this combo and holding for about 5 seconds (possibly much more - it's taken me 10 seconds before) will THEORETICALLY let you reset the base.  I have never gotten this to work before, but the menu once you hit this should be fairly self-explanatory.  The reset I believe resets the base to factory, and unregisters all phones.
