fit the needle correctly as too far up will tilt the needle when you tighten the collar up
there is a stop but it is not very noticeable
turn the machine over by hand (no thread) and see where the needle is hitting the bobbin case. the needle /hook timing may have altered
to check that the eye of the needle should be just below the hook as it reaches the needle
to adjust you will have to take it to a service center.
the needle goes in with the grooved side facing the thread and the cut away bit facing the hook of the bobbin

Refer to your manual to be sure you purchased the correct needle. If they are the Singer brand, then you are okay.

Refer to the manual to be sure of the installation. On some machines the flat side of the needle shaft faces to the back of the machine and on others, to the left side.

The front of a sewing machine needle has a long groove down the shaft and this is what helps feed the thread through the eye and form a proper stitch.
