My master temp 400hd says that the water temp is 98 when it is really 73. The heater comes on and heats the water to 104 but it is really only 79. What is broke?
The heater shuts down because it thinks the water has reached the set temp.

Check the cooling fans, you may need to by a non contact thermo temp gun to verify that the car is really over heating. the are available to harbor freight.
A lot depends on the size of the tank. And when it heats some systems only heat at night , this is ok if the system is large , on most heaters there is a thermostat on the side that can be used to set to a higher temp. the thermostat on your heater may be faulty.
i had something similar once, it ended up being the intake radiator hose, it has a metal coil inside, mine was broken and when you revved the motor it would **** the hose shut and overheat, but under 2000 rpm it was fine .
This could be a number of things. Most often it will be the internal by-pass. You find the assembly inside the water header, it controls water flow through the heater. When it goes bad it can open at a low temp and keep the water from going through the heater. Also you will want to check the temp probe on the side of the header. If this is bad it will usually show up on the temp display though.
hello.....
first in this problem you need to look for cheapest things to do which is start with you thermostat abd make sure its open and close by how much temp inside the eng. then u need to feel the input hose and the output hose which they come from the heater core they should have closely same temp . if there is non of them have any heat thats mean the water pump blower is broke and u have to replace the water pump, if one of the heater core hose hot and the other cold the problem in the heater core , about the A/C light is on the A/C comprasser shoul work with the heat becuase hot air + cold air = dry air which u need for ur front DEF
are you shure that you dont have trapped air in the heater core? get a big funnel that will fit tightly in the radiator filler and fill with coolant and run the car to normal operating temp and watch for the level to drop or bubbles to evacuate into the funnel. on really stubborn air locks i have had to squeeze the hoses to pump water through the heater core.
