SOURCE: LaCie F. A. Porsche Hard Drive

Try this...

use a long bladed kitchen knife to get carefully spread apart the sides from the bottom plate. there are 4 small tabs along each side of the case going int 4 slots on the bottom plate. The long sharp blade inserts easily between the side and bottom plate.
Carefully pry the side away from the bottom plate starting from the front working towards the back. You gently twist the blade to get the tabs out of the slots. the first one is the hardest. After that they pop out easy.
to remove the hard drive mechanism, once you have the bottom plate off, remove the four silver screws--two along each side--then use the knife to separate the sides of the hard drive from the case, so that the front of the drive is angled up (you'll also have to pull the activity LED loose from its hotmelt glue), then slide the drive out of its metal mounting bracket--you won't be able to pull the drive out along with this bracket.

SOURCE: Trying to open the enclosure. How do I do this?

Yeah, it's not apparent how they're put together.  Here's how you do it:
On the back next to the power connector and fan, gently put a flathead screwdriver under the side panel and just unsnap it from the back corner - don't try to pry it all the way off yet, as it's fragile and will break in two easily (I messed it up the first time i tried).
Then gently slide the  screwdriver under the loosened side panel and unhook it from the three pairs of connectors along the side until you can unsnap it from the front side and remove it.
Repeat for the  other side.
Now the front panel will just pop off.
And then the top and bottom halves of the enclosure will simply separate and you can lift the top right off.

SOURCE: slow WD World Edition HD

I understand your pain. Mine was always slow, but it's by design. I am sure the limitation is the amount of RAM it has, because everytime it needs to access data, the RAM is so small that it will have to go back to the drive just to re-read an index. When mine died after 1.5 yrs, I took it apart and found a WD5000AAKS SATA 7200rpm drive. Performance of the drive should be excellent, but in that little plastic box that is acting like a stand-alone NT server, performance is s-l-o-w. As a MyBook, it's best used as a backup unit, but be sure you have a backup of that, since it is highly unlikely it will live much more than 12 months, if that, because it has no forced cooling. See other issues on this site with regard to other MyBooks.

My external pc drive stopped working.i under stand the Head is broken, I want to retrive important data from it. External drive is a Ministation {Buffalo} P{lease help,

You should try mounting the hard disk internally since any external HDD is actually a normal HDD in a SATA to USB enclosure. If that doesn't work , you should try finding recovery experts in your area but that might be expensive!

My buffalo combo 4 2 TB wont show up on my xbox 360. I already have it formated FAT32

The Xbox 360 can only recognize drives up to 16GB as noted on their website, I myself have tried a 32GB flash drive to test the limitations and it was not recognized. At this time it seems as though microsoft is limiting their external storage to 16GB.

I can transfer files off the hard drive but not onto it, it freezes with a few seconds to go. It wont allow me to scan the hard drive either with a virus checker or going into 'properties' then 'tools'. It...

The symptoms indicate that the disk-drive is "dying" -- some parts of the disk CANNOT be read from or written to, thus causing the "freezing" during the file-copy operation.

Exercise the warranty to get it repaired/replaced.

I accidentally kicked my 1tb buffalo external hard disk and it fell the usb connection has been remove and when i connect it again the hard disk start to beep and the computer doesnt recognize and detect...

First try a different usb cable. The cable or the cable connectors may have been damaged as a result of the fall.
If that doesn't work and you are certain that your PC does not recognize the drive, then It appears to me that the fall damaged the delicate mechanical devices inside the drive and you will have to replace it.

Hard drives cannot withstand rough handling. If a hard drive is only dropped about 1 or 2 feet and it lands on a soft surface such as a carpet it MAY survive the fall. But if one falls from a higher elevation, (say 6 feet) onto a hard surfaced floor, it's almost a sure bet that the drive's internal mechanisms are permanently damaged.

To find out for sure, take it to a PC technician and have it tested. It should only cost you a few dollars.

I have a problem with my Buffalo 1TB external Hard drive. Firstly it all lights up and sounds as though its working but i can't find it in my computer with the list of all my other hard drives. The...

> device manager ... listed .. no conflicts ... in working order

That means that the USB-to-disk-drive interface inside the external drive is working correctly, and that the electronics on the circuit board "under" the spinning-part of the disk-drive are working.

However, the problem seems to be that the "spinning" part of the disk-drive (and the read/write mechanism) are not working.

Search online for "data recovery service", namely, professional companies that can disassemble a disk-drive, repair it just long-enough to copy your files. Of course, they are not inexpensive.

Or, if the disk-drive is still under warranty, exercise the warranty to get a replacement. Of course, the replacement will not be preloaded with your data files.

Buffalo 500gb external hard drive not working on dvd player

Many DVD players cannot play just any video files. You can look online at the website for your DVD manufacturer and see if there is a codec pack for your DVD player. If you install a codec pack on your DVD player then you should be able to watch more video formats. Look for one that can do avi, mpeg, mp4, etc files
