There are settings in properties that you can set where it will play on all other CD players or DVDs.
so now you are on a vendetta of necro posting
and this
"but friends have problems with their DVRs"
there is no clear question stated so there will be no answers here.
seem here post is only about some friends
a 3rd party post, and useless.

SOURCE: update player to play all blue ray dvd
The firmware updates for the Blu-Ray players are available directly from the manufacturers' websites - I won't be able to give you an exact website, because we don't know your manufacturer or model #. Not all firmware updates will resolve all issues with Blu-Ray playback. For instance, even the most recent updates for the Philips and Sony Blu-Ray players do not allow you to watch every single Blu-Ray - but this could change at any point in the future. Unfortunately, Blu-Ray is an evolving technology, and each studio is using a slightly different version of the Blu-Ray format - this has caused numerous conflicts and playability issues. For my money, the Playstation 3 is the best Blu-Ray player on the market - it is future-proof.

SOURCE: My LG DVD RECORDER, MODEL RH7500 won't play DVDs.
Check the model specifications for your device. Some players will only accept DVD-R and not DVD+R or not DVD+RW discs. I know it all seems the same, and it's very frustrating, but many companies restrict the type of discs they will allow. My player does +R but not -R. It should still be able to read DVD discs that you made yourself, but they will be of a different type.
