I have a Frigidaire FRS26R4CWE both the Freezer (30 degrees) and Refigerator (41 degrees)were not cold enough. This a spare basement refrigerator that we use once in while. There was no ice in the bin. However, there was a chunk of ice on the back wall. I opened the back panel and found the coils with solid ice at the top. I replaced the thermostat and the defrost cycle worked good. However, the freezer is now at 27 degrees and the refrigerator is 38 degrees. I have the freezer setting at 5 and Refrigerator at 3. Any suggestion?

Hello;

My name is Peter. I am a retired field service refrigeration technician.

When you removed the freezer you should have seen a even frost pattern across the cooling coils.

If you have ice at the top especially in the upper right have corner, then you either have a restriction or a refrigerant leak. In the upper right hand corner you have a very small tube with a inside diameter the size of a small needle. It is not uncommon on older units for this tube to become plugged up or leak.

A repair of this nature by a service technician would be about $550.00 USD.

LG LFX28978 Refrigerator, freezer not cold enough, maintaing temp at 40-41 degrees.

How did you remove ice from freezer. If you uses any type of tool (Scraper etc) then you have possibly punctured the evaporator tubes. These tubes can be either as a radiator type or form part of the freezer box and are very thin therefore susceptible to puncturing when using scrapers or such to remove ice.
To remove ice from refrigerator condensers allow it to melt, you can use a hair dryer to speed this up but DO NOT use mechanical means.

Hello;

My name is Peter. I am a retired field service refrigeration technician.

You are going to have to remove the back cover in your freezer. You need to inspect what is going on.

1.) Evaporator (Cooling coil) motor - If the fan motor has failed you will not get air flow through the cooling coils.
25438946-rodi0hq003gjvlyl45o52cgv-2-0.jpg
Substitution: 5303918549 Cost: $60.00
You have a old unit. This is a substitute motor. You will have to cut and splice wires to install. If you have a multi-meter, if you get 110 volts across the motor and it is not running, then the motor is bad.
A service call for this would be about $400.00.

2.) Cooling coil Iced up - If the coil is iced up you are not going to get air flow through the coil. Your defrost heater may be bad.
25438946-rodi0hq003gjvlyl45o52cgv-2-2.jpg Substitution: 5303918255 Cost: $80.00
If you have a multi-meter, set it to the lowest Ohms. If you get a reading of OL or something under 25 Ohms, then the heater is bad.
A service call for this would be around $450.00.

3.) You may have a bad thermostat - This component is mounted on the upper right had corner of your cooling coil. They explode where the back pops out. This component needs to be spliced and wired.
25438946-rodi0hq003gjvlyl45o52cgv-2-5.jpg
Part #: 5303918214 Cost: $15.00
A service call for this would be about $350.00.

4.) If all of the other components check out, then you have a bad defrost timer. It is located in your fresh food section upper left under the housing cover.

Substitution: 5303918476 Cost: $82.00
A service call would be about $500.00.

Look, you have a older unit that has substitution parts. If you are not handy do not attempt the repair.
You may wish to consider going to a Sears Factory Outlet (Scratch & Dent) Store. You can save $300.00-$450.00 on a unit, and get a one year warrantee with it.
Rule of Thumb: "If the repair cost is 1/3 or more than the original purchase price, then buy new".

Kelvinator Cyclic 330 not getting cold enough

Empty the refigerator and freezer, unplug it for about 8 hours, leave freezer door open so it will completely defrost. Plug it back in for 4 hours and close doors before you fill it back up with food. If you have a thermometer, check the interior temperatures before you fill it back up. Refigerator should be around 42 degrees F.

Frigidaire refrigerator with a broken freezer

He is correct. The temp in the refrig controls how often and for how long the refrig runs. Lets say the temp in your garage is 34 degrees, and you have your refrig set to 36 degrees: The refrig will never run, the fresh foods section will cool to 34, and the freezer will warm to 34. Even if the temp is 45 in the garage and you set the fresh foods to be 33, the refrig will not need to run long enough and often enough to keep the freezer temp cold enough. You will most likely need to have the ambient room temp at least 55 degrees to get satisfactory refrigerator performance. Insulating the refrig will not help. (by the way, outdoor beverage vending machines use an internal heater in cold weather to prevent liquid beverages inside from freezing,..... so using that info, you could put a low wattage heater in your refrig to make your refrig run enough to make the freezer section work. The %&#* with that, just move it into the house!)
