On the vacuum can I lock the on and off switch

Hi there, it's Jack at Dyson.

DC59's light touch trigger on/off switch is engineered to ensure that power is only used for cleaning, and not wasted while picking up obstacles, moving from room to room or changing accessories etc. Some other cordless vacuums remain switched on from start to finish, and runtime is wasted between tasks.

The on/off trigger has been engineered to be as light as possible to hold down. It also fits flush with the handgrip so load is spread across the whole hand.

I hope this information helps, but just to confirm it's not possible to lock the trigger in place as the vacuum hasn't been designed to be used in this way.

How do I change the selector switch

The easiest way is to lock the vacuum in the upright position and then tilt back slightly (raising the drive wheels) slide the carpet / hard floor switch to the desired position.

The n and the d on the bottom of the vacuum, what does it do? it looks like a switch of some kind. i bought the vacuum at a garage sale

This sounds like a Kirby vacuum cleaner. The n is for neutral and d is for drive. When you are using it the switch should be in drive. For moving it around, say into another room or closet, put it in neutral. If you turn the vacuum off with the switch in drive, the rear wheels will be locked.

When I lock (Dyson DC 15 ) upright position the brushes still working

Hi there,

There is a second switch directly adjacent to the ON/OFF switch. This turns power on and off for the burshbar. Please check this switch is in the off position.

If the switch is definitely in the off position and the brushbar continues to run with the vacuum in the upright position, then the brushbar switch has failed in the closed (power on) position and will most likely need to be replaced.

Foot activated power switch will not remain on

This kind of switch will turn on the power when it's pressed down a little, but must be pressed down further for it to actually lock itself on. First, make sure that you're pressing it far enough. One way to tell is operate the switch with the vacuum unplugged. You'll here it click when it locks. Make sure there isn't a foreign object or gunk stuck under the foot pedal that's keeping it from moving the whole way. Finally, you'll have to open the vacuum up, with it unplugged, and check the power switch inside. Try operating the power switch with just your hand. If you think it needs a new switch, you'll easily be able to find one, and really should be able to find one for only a few bucks if you're willing to do the shopping. Just hook the new one up like the old one was.

Does the kirby G5 have a reset button? If so,

No reset button. It sounds like you might have one of several possible problems. Some ideas I have that you could try yourself would be to check the lockout switches: there is one behind the head nozzle, maybe the nozzle is on crooked, if so, maybe not engaging the safety switch, the other lock-out is located where the bag screws on, unlock the bag and re lock it to ensure proper fit. Otherwise, take it to the shop because it could be the motor, the cord, the switch. Hope this helped ya. Let me know. Thanks, Rene (the Vacuum Doctor)

Power switch will not engage.

Possibly the micro switch is faulty or the switch isn't in its proper position in the machine. It could be a cable problem too. An electrical continuity test (with the power off) should prove where the fault is. hope this helps.
