The contact in the lens is the ground contact. If it does not touch the camera mount the camera will, give an error code and not operate. Remove lens mount and check pin spring operation. If stuck slightly enlarge hole

What is the little red button on the lense on the end that screw to the camera that has a red L

That's the aperture lock lever. On many Nikon cameras, the lens needs to have the aperture ring turned to f/32 and locked in place. You then control the aperture from the camera body, the same way as on a lens without an aperture ring.
On older Nikon cameras, you unlock the aperture ring and control the aperture by turning the ring.

MEMORY CARD

Hi there.

This may be easier than you think.<grin>
SD cards can become accidentally locked. Double check your card. Take a look at the side of it. There will be a little switch. Make sure the switch is in the unlocked postion and see if that's your problem. Let me know if that doesn't help.

FEE message in display when using 50mm lense

The FEE message indicates that the lens is not set to smallest aperture (highest number). The camera body expects this so it will have full control of the aperture. It sounds like you may be accidentally bumping or turning the aperture ring on the lens while using it or changing lenses. There is a little slide lock to lock it at f/22 to prevent this. Turn the aperture ring to 22 and move the slider so the white dot is next to the orange mark on the lens barrel.

Nikon N55 camera locks up

The F-- indicates that the camera is not communicating with the lens. There are several reasons for this.

The lens is not capable of communicating. If it's an old lens, without the electrical contacts, then you'll have to set the camera to Manual (M) mode in order to use this lens.

If the lens has an aperture ring, set it to the smallest aperture (biggest F/number) and lock it (if it has a lock).

If the lens has no aperture ring, then the contacts may be dirty. Remove lens, clean contacts on back of the lens and in the mount on the body, then reattach lens.

If that doesn't do it, then either the camera and/or the lens may require service.

Film speed selector stuck

Try to rotate the lock body anti-clockwise. Do not use muscle power, just try to rotate softly the locking body.
