Cd burner makes blank cds

Ok i have vista home basic on a toshiba sat. my wmp will not burn cds anymore.i rip in a cd try to burn it to a blank and the process goes normal-showing analyzing, writing, finalizing on all songs in list.disc is then kicked out saying burn is complete.when i look at it there is no obvious burn tracks on discs and when i put it in any player it just reads"no disc".i can even put it back in computer and it will recognize it as a blank disc.i tried resetting my system with recovery discs-erasing entire hard drive.that resulted in the burner working for one day(i burned disc successfully, next day i wake up try to burn another disc with resulting failure).but here is the best part i can burn dvds(using dvd shrink 3.2) no prob.ihave even tried using my nero to import and burn cds and the result is exactly the same as with wmp.a brief look at drivers and disc player shows everything normal.please help i can give you my phone number if it would help to talk in person.

Try isolating the problem by plugging an external cd/dvd drive via the USB. use this to burn CD/DVD if the process works, replace your laptop dvd drive.

if the brand new dvd drive did not work, problem can be many things, trace them one by one, 1. reinstall the OS. 2. Check for connection problems, like contacts on the dvd drive to the main board. any broken pin? loose contacts, 3. try to burn the old cd that you tried, to other pcs. the cd migth be the culprit. 4. follow my first advice, isolate it by using the external CD burner via the USb. so that we may know if the problem is software or hardware.

If you have Windows Media Player (WMP), I would use that to burn CD's.

Open WMP

Click the "Burn" tab

Insert a blank disk into the drive.

Drag the songs you wish to burn from your library to the left part of the window.

Click "Burn" above where you placed your songs. (Upper right corner)
