That is the problem now days. I fixed color TVs for years. This problem is obviously a failed component. In the old days I would get a schematic, trace the problem and replace a 25 cent component. Now days the set costs more, and the repair cost as much as the set. Everything is throw away after the warranty has expired. Is there anyone out there with a schematic? That is the problem now days. the inverter for the backlight likely has a bad capacitor or more. The fluctuating high voltage is causing the jumping and eventual blackness until sufficient charge is on the caps, at which point it stabilizes...it eventually will stay black unless the caps are replaced.

Sounds like a problem I had with a Polaroid t.v. Take the cover off the back and look for capactors that are buldging on the top. The top should be slightly concave. If they are convex at all, you can buy new one at Radio Shack and replace them for under $5.00
the tv turns on fine,
but after 5 - 30 min or so, "sometimes MORE " the picture all of a sudden go's black. Sound is ok
it is 100% loose contact problem.
1 please check for any connector or print for loose.
2 in signal processor ic there might be loose.
remember there is no component failure.
