Try some factory CD and DVDs and just try to get them to open in Windows (not play in a media player program). If you get errors on every disc you try, it may be your CD/DVD hardware packing in.

If it reads some CDs or DVDs and not others, particularly media discs, you may be having software driver problems, otherwise, it is likely hardware.

Try inserting the disc and spinning it up while resting the laptop on its side, or even upside down. If it reads sideways or upside down, the CD/DVD reader hardware has gone and cannot probably be prepared (this is a symptom of physical controller failure and is ot fixable by normal means).

Good luck...

I have a SD M1502 DVD-ROM drive. it can read CD's just fine, but it can only read SOME DVDs. example: im watching an anime series, store bought, but when i get to Disc 4 the drive cant read it. the DVDs...

There are a couple of things to look at: First of all does your computer have software to read copy-
protected DVD's. Second if this anime set of DVD's is imported from Japan it might not be compatible with players from the US. If you look on the Internet you can find patches for your DVD player software to read foreign DVD's. Check out VLC and libdvdcss.

I have a problem with my TOSHIBA DVD ROM SD R6012, dont read enything DVD, only CD

1. you many need to remove and reinstall the device if removable. Then re-install the ddriver set.\More than likely the laser "read" is defective. This is usually a needed replacement unit.
2.Contact Toshiba technical support. There also may be a loose cable which in any case will require a tech to disassemble the PC unit and repair it.
I hope this helps. Have a great day!

After I reinstalled my pc, the toshiba dvd-rom (sd-c2502) only plays cds, not dvds.

Try re-installing your the driver for your dvd rom. Then try to put different dvds and check if it can read from your drive. If problem remains, I suspected it's your dvd rom is faulty

DVD player won't play DVD, says "load"

The unit can recognize that a disc has been loaded but can not read the contents. This can be as simple as a dirty lens or more drastic like failing optics. Try cleaning the lens using a cotton swab and alcohol. If that fails to correct the problem and a music CD will play OK, then the optics are failing. DVDs require more laser power to read than a music CD.

DVD rom drive

It sounds like the drive itself is faulty. Since you've reformatted, it obviously isn't a software problem. CDs and DVDs are read by two different lasers so its not uncommon for one disc not to be read yet the other is just fine which seems to be the case. A new one can be purchased for under $40. http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&N=2010100005+1036508690&name=Slim+Combo+Drive

Dvd-rom trouble

Hi, first of all, I'd check if you have the problem with CD/DVDs burned (written on a CD/DVD writer) or you have it also with original CD/DVDs, which would be weird. Depending on your finding to the above point I'd do one thing or another, but to me does not look like a driver problem. I'd check with Toshiba support if there's a new firmware for your drive, this does improve the media the device can read and correct problems like the one you mention. To know the fimware version you're using, open device manager and go find your drive, right click on it and choose details tab. Normally the firmware revision is the number at the end of the instance. Good luck mate !
