Try removing the thermocouple where it attaches to gas control, and spray a little WD-40 in the hole, then spin a rolled up small piece of steel wool in the hole as well, then blow it out with compressed air if you can. Then reconnect thermocouple. Make sure thermocouple tip is getting good flame under it, and if that doesn't cure it, then it's time to replace gas control.

Leaking propane is red flag #1 and fire hazard.
Immediately update your insurance and then turn off gas.
If pilot is not staying lit, then gas leak can be cause of pilot problem since pressure on the line is reduced.
Other causes include bad gas control valve, air in the gas line, bad thermocouple, burner parts need cleaning, or all the above.
After fixing leak, replace thermocouple, clean combustion chamber and burner parts, and bleed gas line to remove air.

SOURCE: will this solve my problem of the pilot going out after the water is hot?

Your thermo coupler may be going out. If the thermo couple does not sense heat it will shut the gas off. This is a safety feature. Once you replace that you should be ok.

Have you checked back of water heater for proper valve positioning? (by-pass may be on)
Cold water enters through bottom fitting and hot comes out the top. Any valves in between should be closed and any valves going in bottom and out top should be open.

I have a 6 gal water heater i lite the pilot and turn to on and it runs for awhile then just shuts off

It could be a couple of things, the thermocouple may have gone bad or the actual control has died. I assume that the gas valves are open and in case of propane you have fuel in the tank. water heaters last 5-10 years so replacing the control on a older unit is not cost effective however thermocouples don't cost much.
