I have an IBM thinkpad T23 with a Toshiba SD C2512 DVD ROM but it only reads dvd, and says my cdrom are not formated:

Solution for CD-rom problem: turn CW the second little potentiometer with a tiny screwdriver, just a little and try to read a CD, if it doesnt work then try turn the potentiometer again. the same solution for DVD-rom but with the first potentiometer.
You need the right tools and a fine hand. But it works. Mark the poti with an ink pen before you start, so you know there it was. Turn only one poti 1/8 clockwise and try DVD and CD after reassembly. If no change found, start from the beginning. Change only one poti at the time. If you catch the wrong poti you can return.

I am in the same boat with you... I downloaded Driver Dectective at www.driverfiles.net. After running the program it says "
"Your Driver is a system driver. System drivers are installed natively by the Windows Operating System and do not require updating. If you are having a problem with a system driver you may contact us via Ask a question. "
Don't really know what else to do...

Searched all over the net and reinstalled rom driver which turned out to be the same as original anyway. DVD-r and prerecorded dvds work fine but any kind of cd doesn't seem to read and I get the same error as the other guys here where it says the cd is corrupt etc but definately nothing wrong with disks - all ok in other machines. Despite DVD movies running fine Audio CDs dont play even with windows media player.
System is a second hand IBM Thinkpad T21 with Toshiba SD C2512 DVD Drive. Running Win XP.

at that link at lenovo there is no driver for xp only for windows 95-2000

Had the same problem. Tried solution #1 and it worked!!!
To do this you have to remove the shiny bottom plate (3 screws) and the pots are under a flexible flat cable. Wasn't sure which was 1 and which was 2 so arbitrarily decided 2 was on the right (with front of player with eject button towards me and the back with the plug in connector away from me). 1/8 turn CW and Voila!!
