I have a Maytag MDE9700AYW Neptune 174 Electric Dryer. As many problems people have had with the drum cracking the the resulting symptoms following, I can't seem to find a definite solution for my problem. The drum originally cracked down the seam and I welded and polished it up the best I could. I found that one of the rollers was chewed up from the cracked drum and will definitely need replacing. However the biggest problem I'm having is that all the lights turn on the panel and the motor sounds like it wants to turn on, but the drum does not turn. The sound is a hum and it turns off after 5 or so seconds. I suspect the motor may have burn out when the drum cracked and seized. After the drum repair I can move the drum by hand but the chewed up wheel barely touches the drum so I can possibly be slightly off. I moved the motor by hand as well with no seizing but I noticed the belt not moving with the drum when I manually turn the drum. I read on another sight it could be a thermal fuse and that's why the motor won't move the drum? I need advice on how to procede. Thanks
Sounds like this machine needs retirement~! Not a thermal fuse.
New dryers cost four times as much as the new parts do online and I can fix myself. This dryer can be fixed relatively inexpensively if it is in fact what I think it is. Thermal fuses are about $6. New motors are $50. Replacements wheels are $15. Labor is free. Buying a used dryer does not guarantee longevity any better than fixing this unit and I know where this has been. This has only been used for three years as it has been stored otherwise. It is worth saving and I want a professional opinion on what s/he thinks may now be the problem.

This sounds like the motor is siezed or burned out. I wish I knew how much a motor is, but the Neptune is a good dryer so it would probably be worth it to get a new motor if indeed that's the problem.

If the belt looks worn you should replace it. But it sounds like the idler pulley has gone out of position or possibly broken. The idler pulley adds tension to the belt and keeps it from spinning on the drum surface. Check the path of the belt on the bottom of the dryer. That is where the idler pulley is.

I'd say take the 50% off offer. Dryer drums are very thin, and a weld would most likely still make a thump noise every time it passed the drum supports. (two thumps per revolution) I've seen this on other brands which use thin stainless steel drums. (I didn't look up your model to see if the drum was SS or powder coated metal, or galvanized, or whatever) It is not a real common thing, but certainly not unheard of. I'd say it was indeed a poor weld, but the manufacturer's generally won't help much once it makes it past the warranty period. Don't bother rating this, as anything but a FixYa lowers my rating. Thanks.

that do fall under defective workmanship...but you have to look in your owner manual,,under your warranty page...i know if its stainless your covered..onthejob

could be the board, could be a motor, could be a belt but i would run it intill something just stops or try your best to take it apart and look through things and see if you can see an indication.
