MSD2758DRW Refrigerator. The coils ice up once a month (2 mo)

I have a MSD2758DRW Refrigerator. The coils are icing over about once a month for the last 2 months. From prior posts, it looks like the defroster is not working.

1) Is it possible for me to fix the problem or should I bring in a repair person to diagnosis the problem?

2) If it's suggested that I can fix the problem, what steps do I take to pinpoint the component?

3) Can you please include a link to a technical service manual?

Thanks,

Brad

Please disconnect power from your refrigerator before attempting the following! You will likely need an adaptive defrost board for your refrigerator. The defrost thermostat and heater is only available as an assembly and can be checked while the unit is freezing by checking the resistance with a multimeter. there should be some resistance to the heater assembly but not infinite. If the resistance is high then the heater assembly will have to be replaced. Your model has an adaptive defrost board located in the upper right hand back portion of the control panel in the refrigerator side. This cover is removed by placing your fingers in the 2 indentations at the back of the cover one on the left and one on the right and pulling down and forward. Once the cover is off there are a couple of screws directly above the lights which have to be removed and a couple of hex head screws behind the number faceplate and on the back wall near the water filter. Once these are removed the whole housing will come down the board is at the far back right. It will either be a bare circuit board or a small white box. Just unplug it and replace it with a new one. This will correct 99% of the defrost problems on this line of refrigerators.

SOURCE: Freezer compartment not defrosting

most refrigerators utilize an electrical heater coil to prevent freeze-ups. your coil has most likely failed. hard to pinpoint without being there, however, i would check its resistance with an ohm-meter with power off: if no resistance, then coil is burned out. look for around 2 ohms

1. Ice maker is not cold enough to start the ice making process.
3. having to take off the back panel is an indication of a problem in the defrost system. Call to have a service tech check this out.

Maytag sidebyside MSD2758DRW ice maker won't make ice

Hi,

If the ice maker no longer make ice, check the following.

Check to see whether the ice maker has been turned off. Here's how to check. Look for a wire along the right side of the ice maker that looks a bit like a coat hanger. If this wire is in the raised position, the ice maker is turned off. On some units you simply lower the wire to the down position to turn the ice maker on.

On others, you lower a small red plastic lever to lower the wire. If the wire is in the proper position check the freezer temperature, it should be between 0-8 degrees Fahranheit. If it is warmer than 10-12 degrees, the ice maker may not produce any ice.

Check your door seals and thermostat, repair/replace as necessary.

Thanks

If you clean up the coils down under the ice box could work better. If you change the water filer or water valve or both you might see an improvement.

Freezer and Refrigerator Heating up

chances are the evaporator coils (behind the back freezer wall) are icing up and must be thawed out. this is from too much moisture freezing to the coils (door left open in hot weather, drain plugged, or fridge filled before letting it chill for a day empty and on). take back wall off and use warm water or a hair dryer (only until ice melts- do not overheat metal) to melt the ice. soak up excess water from under fridge, too. also check to see if the fan is working.

About every 2 months the defrost drain gets plugged

Your drain tube may be stopped up with ice at the upper end because it drains too slow because it's stopped up at the lower end in the evaporator pan under the unit at the floor. It can get dust and mold in it. Once you get the ice out at the top a little pressure with a turkey baster will usually clear it out. Flushing it out with hot water and clorox may help. Make sure it drains quick enough to prevent refreezing. . The drain should be located below the evaporator coils on the lower back of the freezer.
Take a bare copper wire and wrap it around a fin near the heater and put the other end a few inches down the drain. The heat convection may prevent it from freezing.

Bottom of Maytag Freezer Ices Up

You have a plugged defrost drain. easiest way to fix it is unload freezer compartment defrost all of the ice, then remove the 2 screws that hold the rear cover in place about half way down the back wall. once this is removed use hot water to flush out the aluminum evap pan at the bottom of the coil. once it is cleared i will usually pur a little bleach in to kill any algae build up.\

be sure to unplug the refrig and use caution not to cut your self on the evap coil as the fins are very sharp..
