Sounds like you are trying to open a file that's on an network, or another drive on the network. Try copying the file first to your desktop or a usb etc, then opening it directly on your desktop computer.

Problem with document on laptop HP

G7 what (G7-1150us)??? 7 years old?
only 3 ways, to corrupt a file
1: PC is virus infected.
2: Hard disk is bad, if S.M.A.R.T disk test fails, it is bad.
3: you somehow, turned off power with the word fail open and this wrecked the fail (xyz.docx)
make sure the Laptops battery is good, try new one? be wise !
make sure to keep the line cord plugged in at all times.
so if you lose power to the home, the battery saves the day
if the battery is bad (old ones are & never seen a 7 year old battery good in my whole life time (50 years on the job)
sorry. for your file loss.
when editing files save it to a new name each time.
like this
myBIO1.docx. myBIO2.docx,
then when the last one is corrupted, the previous is ok
that is if not #1 or for sure #2 caused.

With the line cored (HP 19vdc power pack plugged in)
run crystaldiskinfo...... now.
down load it and run it
and post your results.

this simple program scans the HDD, for errors
Hard drives actually know when they are bad.
(weak HDD are drives with unrecoverable sectors or clusters)
the UN word is the key, there,

Does anyone know how I can repair .mpp file?

you can't repair the MPP file yourself it would be too complex. There are tools around which will attempt to repair it for you but they will charge you for it.

Here's a repair tool which I selected form the internet at random. They have a demo of it which you can use to see if the file is recoverable but my guess is if your actually want to recover it, it's going to cost you. I'm unaware of any freeware recovery programs for this file type.

When I attempt to open a word document, I get a error message

You made a backup? If yes, then:
Start MSWord.
Click the Microsoft Office Button, and then click Open.
Locate the folder in which you last saved the missing file.
In the Files of type list, click All Files. The backup file usually has the name "Backup of" followed by the name of the missing file.
Click the backup file, and then click Open.

Otherwise it is necessary to try only this way:
DOC Repair Kit is a comprehensive Microsoft Word DOC repair tool with immense potential and an interface that makes the entire procedure a snap. Based on a lightning-fast proprietary core, the program knows how to repair Word DOC files in situations when other tools appear completely helpless.

If this way didn't work, try to find the answer here: http://www.filerepairforum.com/forum/microsoft/microsoft-aa/word/392-how-to-repair-word-after-the-file-is-corrupted-and-cannot-be-opened

I've been getting pop-up windows that say I am prevented from opening or changing documents/files due to lack of authorization or permission. I am the owner of and only person using this computer. How can...

I am not sure if the documents or files that you are opening or changing are from attachments sent to you via email or not, but I can suggest that you can try this step:

Right click on one of the affected files and select Get Info.

This will open a long narrow box providing detailed information of the document.

Now look at the bottom of the window under Sharing & Permissions

Click the padlock and enter your User Admin password when the pop up window appears.

This will allow you access to changing the current permissions of this document.

Make sure you see permissions for "Read and Write" attached to your user name.

If you do, then go ahead and close this window. However, if you see only Read permissions attached to your user, then change that to Read and Write.

Once you have done this, close this Get Info window.

Try to launch that affect document to see if it opens now. If it does then this may be a permissions issue that is affecting your documents and files.

Whether you can or not, I would still recommend you still run this procedure below in order to try and fix this permissions issue.

Now run Disk Utility to repair all permissions on your Mac OS X volume.

Go to Finder Menu bar
• Click Go > Utilities > Disk Utility and open up Disk Utility app.
• Click on Macintosh HD volume (or on the name you have changed this volume to.)
• Select "Repair Disk Permissions"
**Let Disk Utilities run this repair permissions until completion

Once Disk Utility is complete and there are no errors in red in the completion summary (if there are errors listed in red, re-run Disk Utility to see if those error will clear- if they don't reply back to this post right away and let me know what the exact error message is), quit Disk Utility.

• Now attempt once again to access the affected documents and files and see if you are able to access these items now.

I hope this helps.

Regards,
