SOURCE: HP k80 will not print yellow
spounds like a defective print head bud. these do wear out and most of the time it will cost as much as a new unit.. Good Luck
I dont recomment you use non gen toner, it will cause problems, but cause it is xmas ..... left side of toner cart is reset assy, examine it, there is a lever that falls back once new cart is inserted, this lever need to be placed in 10 oclock position now it at 3 oclock, 3 screws carefull removal and reset into position.
Warning useing a toner longer than it was ever designed for can and probally will damage the drum, powder will run out, developer roller will make direct contact with drum surface and scratch it.

it is most proberly that the cartridges are damaged now due to the refilling because certain cartridges can't be refilled and some can bt are limited to the amount of times that you can fill them so you might have to go out and buy new cartriges but try this 1st. remove the cartridges and use alcohol or spirits on a soft cloth and wipe the pins on the head of the printer and also on the cartridge were the pins would make contact to the cartridge these should be copper in colour.
SOURCE: refilled cartridge, still says it needs to be replaced...
If you let the cartridge run totally dry then they need to be reset or replaced, I have tried purchasing reset software myself and found then to be a waist of money as they do not reset the cartridge at all. Do yourself a favor and replace the cartridge and remember to top up the cartridges before they get half empty.
SOURCE: Brother HL-4040CN won't read or show new refilled cartridge in the LCD
I think I know what the problem is...
When you refill these toner cartridges you need to reset the "toner empty" cog wheel.
For instructions on how to do this follw this link:

It has pictures and explains how to reset the cartridge
Good luck,
Billy.
