Read through all the steps and get a good understanding of process before starting.
Perform manual Un-installation of OLD printer drivers Click Start > Devices And Printers,
right-click on the Dell AIO 964 printer icon, and click on Remove This Device
Unplug the USB cable from the computer.Step 3:
Download the ZIP
from the Dell website here:
Extract all the files from R166225.ZIP
intoa separate folder by themselves. Remember the location of the folder for later use. It would be best to create a new folder and extract the files to that folder to make it easier.Step 5:
Navigate to the directory you extracted the files to, locate SETUP.EXE
, and run it. This will run the Dell Clean-Up Utility
, which removes old printer drivers/files from your system. You may need to navigate to a sub-folder named "CleanUp_Utility" under the folder that you just created in order to run SETUP.EXE
Reboot the computer when prompted.Step 7:
Download the self-extracting file R146813.EXE here:
Navigate to the file R146813.EXE, right-click the file name
, click Properties,
click the Compatibility Tab
, and check off the following check boxes: Runthis program in compatibility mode for: (then select Windows VistaService Pack 2), and Run this program as an administrator.
Step 9: Right-click SETUP.EXE
, click Run as Administrator
, and run SETUP.EXE
.You might be able to get away with just running the executable withoutthis step, but I included it for redundancy and for safety's sake.Step 10:
Re-connect the USB cable to your computer when prompted by the Setup Utility.
A small warning: when I did this step, Windows detected my printer and installed its own native drivers
forthe printer, and a dialog box popped up attempting to print analignment page. I ignored this dialog box entirely. If this happens, you will be prompted by the Setup Utility
to update the driver
, which is what you want to do. Continue to run the Setup Utility
as normal.Step 11:
Reboot the computer again.
After starting up Windows 7 and logging in, Click Start > Devices and Printers,
double-click the printer icon.
Click Customize your Printer,
then the Ports Tab
. Check off "Enable bidirectional support
Verify that the printer is communicating with the operating system by printing a test page. You can go back to Customize your Printer
and click Print Test Page.
If it still doesn't work try and reboot and try printing test page again.
Thank you and enjoy the tip.
