Hi,
Appreciate the direct "Ask Me".
To my understanding, your Windstar is in
limp home mode (Safe Mode). This is to get you safely to your destination/garage/mechanic with as little possibility of furthering damage to the engine/vehicle. The correct diagnostic procedure would then be to have the computer of the vehicle scanned. Error codes/fault logs would then be displayed. The error codes would pinpoint probable area of fault/where to start further diagnosis.
Incidentally, you might be interested to learn that there was a
recall order/
technical service bulletin (TSB) on this model regarding "
check engine light".
This may shed additional insights. There are also info in the same page if you are considering a DIY.
Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.
Good luck and kind regards. Thank you for using FixYa.
BTW, how is the radio of the Ford Explorer?
