Make sure its an original Osram or Philips bulb inside the housing. If its a cheap lamp it will act this way. If it is an original lamp, then you may have a power supply issue. It shouldn't affect your TV but you may want to try resetting the lamp timer by following the instructions that came with the lamp.
TY-LA1001 Timer reset
While pressing the VOL- button on the projection display, hold down the number 0 button on the remote control at the same time for more than 5 seconds.
The first thing to try is a new lamp. There should be an orange or red tag on the left side of your set that has the lamp number on it. The number will look something likr BP96-01434A. It probably won't be this exact number but will have that sort of format. Google "DLP lamp" and you'll find numerous sites that sell lamps. Shop around for the best price.
You have to reset the lamp timer. Turn the power back on. While pressing the VOL button on the projection display, hold down the PIP button on the remote control simultaneously for more than 5 seconds. The screen should show something that says "LAMP TIME WAS RESET TO 0. The lamp indicator should go out.
Check the lamp door assembly, if the lights are alternating red then green, then this might mean that the metal pin that looks like a roofing nail is not making contact with the metal clip. Remove screws, reset panel in place and turn on, the red power button should be the only light on.
