This is a known issue for this camcorder model, canon will fix it for free. Heres there public announcement:
CCD Image Sensor
It has recently come to our attention that the vendor-supplied CCD
image sensor used in this Canon digital camcorder may cause the
following malfunction: When the product is used in recording or
playback mode, the LCD screen and/or electronic viewfinder may exhibit
either a distorted image or no image at all. While reports of this
malfunction have been rare in the United States, we have determined
that it may occur if the product is exposed to hot and humid
environments.
Effective immediately, and regardless of warranty status, Canon will
repair, free of charge, products exhibiting the above-mentioned
malfunction if the malfunction is caused by the CCD image sensor. Canon
will also cover the cost of shipping and handling in connection with
this repair.

Same problem here. I turn it on and the screen is black except for the white words and numbers. I record but all I have on playback is the sound.
It worked a few days ago but when I turned it on again...no picture.
Could there be a button I may have pressed?
I also am having this problem.
In reference to solution #1: Can you tell what the flex looks like and what it looks like when working and when it's not working.
Thanks
Tom
same problem here, thinking i made a bad decision buying a cannon
Ditto with this problem. What is the flex anyway?
how much does it cost to fix this problem from Canon
Ani
I am having the same problem as all the previous commenters. All I get is a black screen when the Camcorder is in 'CAMERA' mode and all I get is sound upon playback.
I see the recommended solution suggests fooling around with the flex. What and where is the flex? I have no clue. Also, has anyone sent their Camcorder to CANON for repairs on this issue? if so, how much did it cost, and how long did repairs take? I wonder if I should simply invest in another, non-CANON camcorder, since this might be a manufacturing defect. If it is, I wish I could get my money back!
Anyway, any suggestions would be helpful. Thanks a lot!
Information is displayed on screen and audio is present but only blackness where image should be, both when viewing and recording. Yes, lens cover has been removed!
I have the same problem. Thought I might have to take it aprart.
