I have 2001 Dodge Ram 1500 4x4, 5.2 engine. The truck will start and run great for 10 minutes and just shut off. It will then not start for 10 minutes. Then it will start and run fine for most of the day. The check engine light will come on and then go off so of will not give any codes. Can you please help.

Just because the CEL goes off does not mean codes are gone. Scan tool will show stored codes.

SOURCE: Truck (2001 Dodge Ram 1500) runs fine. Check

I found that the code is set for:

P1740....TCC Solenoid or Overdrive Solenoid performance

which indicates that a rather inexpensive fix is in order, not a complete transmission replacement!! The TCC is the solenoid which controls the locking of the transmission converter so that you get better gas mileage with no "slippage" while at highway speeds, which is normal when the converter is unlocked as you slow down. If it is locked and the solenoid fails to release it the car will stall when you come to a stop since the fluid in the converter fails to act as a clutch and the engine is connected directly to the transmission input shaft. If it never locks then the oil in the transmission will overheat at highway speeds since ther "slippage" will always be present in the converter cauasing frictional heating of the oil.

Whenever you get a quote from a shop ALWAYS get at least two more!!! No matter what the job is, even a muffler replacement get many quotes. Go to a reliable transmission repair shop and ask for their opinion. In my humble opinion the shop that told you that you need a new transmission is just hungry for work - stay away!!!!

SOURCE: my dodge is a 1996 dodge ram 1500 with a 3.9 v6.

intermittent lean condition may be caused by leaking intake manifold gaskets. Get some carb cleaner and start the truck. Open the hood and spray carb cleaner on the intake manifold gaskets. If the engine reacts at all, you have a gasket leak. If you have questions, please let me know.

Runs good shut off for a few minutes restart runs terrible engine spits and sputters

A bad fuel pump may cause a 2001 Dodge Ram 1500 5.9l to run for a few minutes and just shut off without sputtering. It can also be that the fuel pressure regulator (on top of fuel pump assembly) is stopped up. Dodge Ram trucks have been named Motor Trend magazine's Truck of the Year three times.-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

the first suspect is the igniton switch. when this happens, take the ign key and just barlely turn it, either way, not enough to go off/on just a little tweak, it the lights come back on or flicker, that ign switch will need replacement.
