Perhaps you tried to make a DVD yourself? and most DVD players accept DVD with photographs and MP3 music, but only when you keep yourself to the folder format and file format, described in the manual. When you try to burn a DVD from a MP4 file, you can be sure it won't work.
Can you share what you think should be on the disk you try to play, when the player responds with invalid file format? and can you add the brand an model number in the text, in stead of on top of the question?

How do I format a disc (DVD or CD) on Windows XP?

You only format a CD/RW or a DVD/RW, which are re-writeable.

Regular discs do not need to be formatted (CD-R or DVD+R, DVD-R, DVD+R DL, etc.).

To format the DVD/RW idisc, use the "burner" software ( Sonic?, Nero?) and choose [Tools] [Erase Disc] (erase is the same as format)

The file number 1 has invalid format

You Could:

1) Check that your DVD reader is working (use another disk).
2) Check the region code for the disk (most likely reason).
3) Take it to the shop you brought it from.

Dvd not playing dvds

Basic Information:

i) try to choose  right burner for eg: Nero CD/DVD Burner

ii) try to choose the right format,

for eg: MP3/MP4/ Audio Songs will come under Audio format
in such case select "Audio CD/DVD format" in Nero CD/DVD Burner

for eg: .DAT/MPEG/MP4/Video will come under Video format

in such case select "Video CD/DVD format" in Nero CD/DVD Burner

for eg: "DATA CD format" is only storing some data on CD/DVD iresspective whether it is                            Videofile or Audio file,

these "DATA CD formated" CD/DVD when played in DVD Player will play only Audio files
                but no Video Files

Invalid Partition Table

now a day, no installation CD or DVD come with any of the new laptop anymore. you need to make a backup copy of the operating system when you first fired it up. if yu did. you still can make a backup from programs>accessories>backup.
but since the laptop is DOA. look for your receipt, the laptop should have one year warranty from best-buy. if not it should be have the warrant from DELL.
since you don't have the DVD. you can request one from DELL.

Zenith Z42P3 "Invalid Format" message from upconverter DVD

Ran into the same problem with this DVD player and my LG tv. Try this:
Open the DVD tray, with the DVD tray open press the HDMI select button until the proper resolution for your tv is illuminated, put the DVD back in, close the tray and try again. Simple fix -- worked beautifully for me.

Good luck
