Hissing noise will be from high voltage regulator, i would suggest to do following:

1. switch tv off
2. remove plug from the wall
3. using air blower (compressor attachment - not leaf one!) blow the dust, especially from high voltage box section
4. connect the tv and switch on

if tv still issue hissing noise - follow 1 and 2 then:
3. remove back cover
4. use air blower again...
5. re-install back cover
6. reconnect tv and switch on

if hissing noise persist - check for blown capacitors on high voltage, replace if necessary, they have nasty tendency to pop if they are too long in storage, especially if tehy were overheated or frozen.

hope this will help you solve the problem, do not forget to vote...

SOURCE: sylvania 42" flat screen won't turn on

First you should check the fuse and the wiring in your tv by removing the back cover. Make sure no wires are bare or touching. If there are any, wrap them with electrical tape.
If you cannot see anything wrong by looking, then it is probably the set has a bad transformer (high voltage)

The display is broken, this isn't a cost effective fix either, try and find another tv, same model number, with a good lcd module or just scrap it for parts. If the break is low enough you may be able to live with it. Sorry to be the harbinger of doom and gloom....

SOURCE: buzzing/fizzing noise from back of sony flat screen tv

Below is an image of rear side of your TV, Sony KDL-40W5500
Top right corner is marked there and possible cause of noise seems back light inverter board, there are high voltage going to CCFL inside LCD panel and seems high voltage leakage causing that buzzing/ fuzzing noise.

Replace back light inverter board upon voltage leakage confirmation.
Thanks.

Color image is coming out black and white

does it happen on the any input or just on tv setting?
if it's judt tv then sounds like the tuner, if it's on any input, then the video chip or a decoder on that board.

TV wont turn on, makes buzzing noise and shuts off

I have two RCA HD52W59 TV's. I have had one for 3 years and one 4 years. The one I have had for 4 years is giving me the problem. Last week the tv turned off while watching it. It wouldnt come right back on. 10 minutes later we tried and it worked fine. the other night the kids were watching and it turned off and smelled like something burning. I tried turning it right back on and got no power at all. I tried to turn it on two days later and it made a buzzing noise and the green light went out. Never did get a picture, no powering up on the screen. Any ideas? Don't want to spend alot of money. Really loved the TV hope it isnt junk now. Better yet I hope the same thing doesnt happen to the other one I have.

TV turned off by itself and now it won't turn back on

If the tv has nothing happening at all when you try and turn it back on including any noise, your power supply is broken. If it is still trying to turn on or does make noise, an internal component has come loose or been knocked off, most likely to your picture tube.

Television not satying on.

It needs to be brought into the repair shop for service. There is nothing that you can do to make it come on. It's just an old set.
