If acer gives you a cd wherein you can insert it and reformat back to original settings, please make sure you shut down the pc and then press repeatedly F12. Then select Boot to CD. Follow the prompts and select Format C: drive to begin reformatting it..
If the recovery partition is intact, boot the machine and press ALT + F10 simultaneously. If the partition still exists and hasn't been corrupted, the machine will take you through the recovery process of which Factory Restore is among the options.

This can be achieved by using the CD/DVD given to you by Acer, the one which would say as Restore or System CD. It would be a bootable one so u can just put it in and start/restart you comp, it will begin installation...
if the recovery discs wont work you may want to low level format (powermax) and try a fresh install.
only downside is u will need a copy of windows with the serial key
and u will lose all your data

YOU DONT NEED BACKUP DISKS AS THEY WONT REPAIR THE STARTUP PROBLEM .. THEY WILL ONLY SAVE YOUR DATA FROM GETTING LOST .. WAHT YOU NEED IS A BOOTABLE XP OR VISTA DISK FROM WHICH YOU CAN REINSTALL THE WHOLE OPERATING SYSTEM AGAIN
