Nothing... isimply turned it around to hook subwoofer it shut off.
SOURCE: I have a 705 receiver hooked up with HK speakers.
'the best way' is highly subjective.
if you are testing with a 'real' 5.1 or 7.1 source such as a dvd or bd there should be signal getting to the sub, depending on the source content (play a scene with explosions or something). if this is the case and you are not getting signal check all connections. is the sub powered or passive? if powered is it on? maybe try turning down or disconnecting other speakers so you can tell for sure if the sub is making any sound?
if you are using 2 channel playback like a standard cd or an input from an mp3 type player then the sub may not be in use depending on the receiver setup - in order to get 2 channel info to more than 2 channels - 2.1 or 3.1 or 4 or 4.1 or 5.1 etc - the receiver has to do some processing such as "pro logic" to interpolate the 2 channel info to the extra speakers.. you may experiment with these 'enhanced' settings..
