SOURCE: I have a 705 receiver hooked up with HK speakers.

'the best way' is highly subjective.
if you are testing with a 'real' 5.1 or 7.1 source such as a dvd or bd there should be signal getting to the sub, depending on the source content (play a scene with explosions or something). if this is the case and you are not getting signal check all connections. is the sub powered or passive? if powered is it on? maybe try turning down or disconnecting other speakers so you can tell for sure if the sub is making any sound?
if you are using 2 channel playback like a standard cd or an input from an mp3 type player then the sub may not be in use depending on the receiver setup - in order to get 2 channel info to more than 2 channels - 2.1 or 3.1 or 4 or 4.1 or 5.1 etc - the receiver has to do some processing such as "pro logic" to interpolate the 2 channel info to the extra speakers.. you may experiment with these 'enhanced' settings..

Amp wont play

Quick test...with your Lanzar volume all the way down, connect MP3 player or other type audio source directly to the subwoofer input connection. Play audio and slowly increase volume control. If subwoofer is working using this method, reconnect and check for audio output to Lanzer connection problem, or subwoofer "settings" issues with the receiver.

How do I hook up speakers?

If you are referring to 5.1 surround you would have to have 5 speakers plus one powered subwoofer. The front left and right as well as your center channel to the majority of the sound reproduction with the rear channel being there for intricate sounds and background noise. The subwoofer will be a preamp output from your receiver. That signal will then get amplified by your subwoofers power amp. Generally subwoofers are tucked away in a corner while the other 5 speakers form a box around your viewing area.

Bass sounds only

That is tricky one. Did you try adjusting the EQ on both the stereo and the amp? Is the Mute turned on because it will act like that? Is both rca jacks plugged in on stereo and amp?
