The button cell battery is dead. You can replace them but you will have to solder them in. If you decide to do so dont heat the battery up to much for it may explode. If you have a friend that knows how to solder ask them for help.

SOURCE: Problem with the 1st generation sega genesis

If the screen changes (From snow to black or something) when the console is turned on it sound like the console is partially working. Try cleaning the Cardridge pins que tip and some sort of cleaning fluid.

Once this is done insert and eject the cartridge several times then repeat the cleaning process on the cartridge. Hope this helps.

SOURCE: Sega Genesis not showing a picture

As I had just a similar problem with my MegaDrive/Genesis maybe this helps: Try an older TV set. I am not joking. It might very well be the case that newer TV sets/high-end TV systems can't handle the signals of the older video game systems. I have a 100 hz TV set and whereas there are no problems with a SNES, with the MegaDrive I just had a black and white screen with bars running through it. On a 60 Hz TV set this problem does not occur. Keep in mind that there were no 100 hz/HDTV sets around when these video game systems were in general use.

SOURCE: sega genesis isnt working...

Have you cleaned the Sega? What I mean is where the casset game goes. Push down the little flap, and there should be a little strip with contacts on the inside. Just clean it with a cotton swab and alcohol. And also, clean all your games also the same way.

Hope this helps.

SOURCE: how do i set up my sega genesis

There should be regular av cables and wall adapter for it. Mine came with the wrong cords and that might of happened to you. So if you don't know the av cables go in the back of the tv and plug's in the back of the sega. and the wall adapter goes in the wall. If you don't have the cords than get them off line. Type in:

http://www.amazon.com/s/?ie=UTF8&keywords=sega+genesis+cords&tag=googhydr-20&index=aps&hvadid=2858659671&ref=pd_sl_8zrz6m8bxu_b

cut and paste it online and you can get them.
