Hi, I have an Asus K8N-VM Mother board and running Vista Ultimate and find I cant configure the soundmax drivers properly, I can get the sound in stereo but not in 5.1 surround sound ! Also the sound manager comes up on screen as a stereo only. When I am booting up I get a message saying adi codec not loaded.

This model has premium onboard sound. The driver available from ASUS is for this onboard sound capability. It does not have a "card" - if you are trying to install a sound card in the expansion slot, I would recommend taking it out.
You did not specify your OS. The latest ASUS sound driver is available here:
Try going to the Asus website and look for support for your MB drivers and Operating System.
If there is no longer any Win98 support for your MB then I suggest a fresh computer and more recent software for less hassle!
A ten year old OS indicates to me that you might be stuck until you go with the flow!
Cruel but true.
Hopefully the recent cheap prices for computers pre-installed with Vista or XP will persuade you.
well I sugest you to upgrade your computer with a removable sound card as Creative audigy for example,as long as you are not using the computer only to listen to music:)so..I suggest you to give up the on board sound card..it will never satisfy your exigence.it is to solicitated and it might fall for good if you keep using it for more than a simple music listen..its not just a software/driver problem..here we are talking about a hardware problem..youre on board soundcard simply cant do the job bye
ok i have encounterd such a problem myself , it works on some systems but just give it a try , download the "soundmax digital intigrated audio" pack , it comes with audio drivers and all neccesary software
