I have a GE space saver microwave, JVM1653SH02, stopped working.
I was using the defrost and all of a sudden it stopped and the display panel lit up (no numbers or letters) then it flashes "please press clock" I do and nothing happens. The only button that works is the clear button and that doesn't do anything other than beep. The light, fan, etc. will not turn on. It just continues to flash please press clock. The light does come on when you open the door. I shut the power down in the kitchen and brought it back up, thinking it would restart itself, no good. It's still flashing "please press clock". Can I fix this myself or do I have to have a pro or pitch it?

If there is no power at all to the display or the panel then it is failure of the board. But if there is power without heating, if the turntable/fan/light works, then it can be related to failure of relay, Magnetron, Waveguide or capacitor.
Sounds like the magnetron has gone bad. Check around the internet for a replacement ($40 bucks or so), there are couple of blogs on how to replace... need some patience since it takes a couple of hours. The diode might be bad and should go ahead and change it while you are in there. Be sure to discharge the capacitor...
The magnetron is overheating, and the magnetron thermostat is tripping, interrupting power until it cools back down.
This is to protect the magnetron from being destroyed from overheating.
It may be that the internal cooling is not occurring or the magnetron is failing. Cooling can be compromised by:
- failed or failing internal cooling fan - blocked air inlet or filter - outer cover not installed correctly
There should be a "mini-manual"
hidden inside the unit behind the control panel or hidden on the left
side
behind the grille, which is very helpful when troubleshooting, &
testing.

I have a GE over the range space saver microwave that was only 18 mos. old when it stopped heating. GE replaced the magnetron for us at no charge but since we did not have a service contract - they charged us $200 to install it. It only cost $375 new installed. Your choice.
If you can program it and the problem occures when you push START. Then the problem is a door switch, or the control panel not having a completed circuit. Think of your control panel as an off-on switch.COOK, the control panel switches on for 100% of the time programed. DEFROST,The control panel turns the Cook-Relay on for 30% and off for 70%, on, off, on, off,for the time you programmed for DEFROST. This is how it works. There is no lowering of the output. The output is 100% anything other than COOk is done in % of time on, % of time off. This is why you can hear a "Bump" when Defrosting. The "Bump" is the Cook-Relay sending power to the High Voltage Side, 30% on, 70% off.
