Try to boot with you Windows CD, or the rescue disk you mad, while setting up the system. Then you start as if you want to install Windows. The system says: there is already a windows on the HD, shall I try to recover that. Answer yes and if the HD is not completely dead, this should solve the problem.
If the system disk can't find a HD, you are in trouble, because there is nothing to install the operating system. Let us hope this is not in your computer.

this happen when the computer does not detect the hard disk, check the cable and power connections of the hard disk
SOURCE: I did a disk sanitizer on my 8440p XP edition and
im not sure i understand the disk sanitizer or which disk you did it on
click start control panel administration tools computer management disc management right click on your drive select properties tools check now scan for and attempt to recovery bad sectors and
automatically fix any file system errors tick in both boxes or tick one box then wait until it has finished then return and tick in the other box
i have found the best results ticking the first box then returning after chkdsk has finished automatically fixing files
you should have no input while chkdsk is running any input might further damage your hard drive
hope this helps you

First - re-seat the harddisk and reboot the computer. If the computer does not boot up then reboot andgo into the BIOS configuration to see if the BIOS detects the hard drive. If itdoesn't detect the hard drive then it could be faulty. Then the hard drive needsto be replaced in the computer/laptop, Windows installed and the computer orlaptop's device drivers plus your programs etc. to get a functioningcomputer/laptop again.
