I know how you feel because I had the same problem with mine until I read about the procedure.
Most of those Jump start chargers unfortunately require that you charge them when you buy it and then maintain the charge at least once a month.
There is usually a light on the charger to indicate that the charger is fully charged.

The first answer is the correct one, Every device that utilizes a sealed lead acid battery such as your vector MUST be regularly maintained or you will destroy the battery in it, Just like the battery in your car. if you leave it sit until it goes dead and then recharge it, it will only last a few cycles and then loses the ability to hold a charge due to plate sulfation . Carrying a wetted cell (automotive battery) as a back up is foolish at best. First off you risk spilling sulfuric acid in the trunk or any time you use it. Next, you may as well just replace the bad battery and fix the electrical issue causing the problem to begin with. And if this is an "outback"situation, have a battery isolator and switch over installed along with a second battery. so that you can run two batteries. switch over as needed, use a starter solenoid and a switch to use the second battery as a jump battery, and the system will keep keep both batteries charged

SOURCE: My vector start-it elite jump starter is not

Hi Ydja,

The batteries on these jump boxes don't last very long. I've been through three of them. Never again.

Now I just carry an extra battery. It's more powerful and has laste longer than the three jump boxes put together.

Best regards
Mike

This unit contains a sealed lead acid battery. As such it is necessary to maintain the battery much as you would an RV or tractor or other occasional use battery. If you left the charger plugged in all the time, that's what killed the battery. If you charged it less than once every two or three months, that's what killed the battery. If you stored it in a cold place it may have sulfated. If you stored it in a hot place it may have dried out, especially while charging. The good news is that a replacement battery is not expensive and you can install it yourself. Pull the case apart (look for hidden screws). You may find a good YouTube video to help. Unplug the battery and either shop on-line or go to a battery plus store. But remember, the old SLA battery models like this are rapidly being replaced with LiPoly units that have very good latency (storage) without loss of power. You can get a good one for around $100.

Vector doesn't hold a charge.

How old is it? If it's more that 2 years old the battery needs to be replaced.

NO, you will destroy your charging system if it is left on after starting.

Everything works but the jumper cables

Most likly the battery is old and will not keep a charge. I just replaced my battery for about $50 a few weeks ago. Go to a story like Battery + for a replacement. It worked for me.
