When playing cd's the player skips and then stops when the second part of the disc is reached?

Make sure the unit is mounted level and not to secured that its pinching down on the unit

If the laser pickup is skipping, it is near end of life. Buy a CD cleaning kit and follow instructions, if there is no change the laser pickup assembly will need to be replaced, not cost effective to repair far cheaper to replace player.

If you've tried a DVD Laser Cleaning Disc and get the same results then the Laser is failing.

Replacements are sometimes available but not normally costs effective.

unfortunately if your disc is clean and scratch free your laser will be weak and need replacing,, on that model cleaning the laser is a waste of time and money as its a sealed cabinet --check for flaws on your disc itself

There is a product called a cd/dvd lens cleaning disc. Worth the investment to have around.

Be sure discs are free of dust and scratches.

this may just be the mechanism changing diretion as it reads the second layer on the disc usually because the film is too long to go on one side of the dvd disc.

the rails on the laser slead need cleaned..the grease gets hard/dirty and stops it from moving skip it to track 16 to move the dirt off the track..

Is it now, not playing disc's that it used to play? If this is the case, the laser pick up either needs to be cleaned (with cleaning disc) or it needs to be replaced. If cleaning it does not help, the pick up is getting weak. When this happens, it will only play disc's with a high reflective surface. Store bought disc's have the best reflective surface. Burned disc's are not as good. Some burned disc's are better than others. The disc's with a blue or green data side are the highest reflective surface for burned disc's.

Sometimes the disc's can not be played because of the condition of the disc. If it has a lot of scratches on it, the player will have problems if those scratches are deep or if they are in the area of the disc that the TOC (table of contents) is written on the disc. Thate area of the disc is in the inner most area of the data side of the disc. The cd player must read it first, then it knows where to find all the songs and all the information for the songs.

Fingerprints are also a problem for cd players. A fingerprint will bend the light from the laser and make a disc unplayable or cause a lot of skipping.

The first thing to do is to clean your disc's. I use windex and a soft cloth like a bath towel. It cleans cd's and dvd's as good or better than any of the disc cleaning kits you can buy at a retail outlet.

Next, get a cleaning disc for the lens of the laser pick up. Run it for about 20 to 30 seconds and then take it out.

If these things do not help, you may just need the laser replaced. That usually runs about $125 or so depending on the rates of the shop you take it to.
