My KSRP25FNSS makes a strange knocking noise at each compressor shut down and sometimes during running. The noise is always a series of 5 knocks, very loud, in quick succession that telegraphs though
I seriously thought that once they reburied the 10,000 year old human remains found nearby when starting a new development , that this noise would go away. But it didn't, so it's not a poltergeist as I had thought. The good news is that I don't have to report it when I sell the house! LOL (seriously, this isn't a joke, and the knocking noise is very real and very loud).

Hi,
By you discription above it sounds like one of the three spring the supports the compressor pump has failed or broke. Now the only fix is to have the compressor replaced, but if the unit is still cooling, currently its a noise problem only. I hope this helps you. If this is still under a warranty, ask for it to be checked as if in warranty it needs to be replaced. Good Luck

A freezer compressor is what pumps chilled Freon -- or another cooling agent -- through coils that line the freezer compartment. ... The cooling agent inside the compressor is sensitive to being moved around, which can cause knocking noises. Also, loose components can cause knocking sounds.
I had accidentally overcharged a unit with freon one time (r410a freon), and when the unit stopped, the compressors rotor would spin backwards and make a loud "knocking" noise. This was on a scroll compressor, not a reciprocating compressor. Also, most compressors have a check valve, allowing freon to circulate in 1 direction only. And if it fails, when the compressor stops, the freon will rush opposite its normal direction of flow, and will sound off as a knocking noise(again, I've seen that on a scroll comp). That may make your indoor coil shake. I've seen/heard that make the copper lines shake but never the coil. Hope this helps! And FYI... Most ac service techs can check "superheat and subcool" as well as freon pressures. Without checking these 2 temperature measurements, we are just guessing as to how much freon is in the system. Make sure to ask politely beforehand for your service tech to do so PROPERLY when he checks the freon levels per factory specs, which should be on the units technical data located on the outdoor unit.
Pull the fridge away from the wall and inspect the compressor. Your description sounds like the compressor is hitting something. It is rubber mounted and usually can be pushed away from whatever it is hitting. You do not want to jamb something to stop the noise, as the compressor needs to move freely. Many compressors shake during start up and shutdown, and this is considered normal. Abnormal if the compressor hits something during this movement.
these high efficiency compressors make noise when they are in defrost..you will sometimes hear water running, or tapping noise or even a popping noise. if it happens when its off in defrost.. it will only happen three or four times per day as this is the defrost frequency and nothing can be done without securing the heat exchanger to the suction line ..sometimes these come loose...
check te rubber mounts at the bottom of the compressor
the rubber rots after some time and the compressor moves on shutting down as the knocking could be that noise
Well you may want to have a tech come out and check the freon level, but mostly when going into defrost, some units make alot of noise, the freon is reversed in the unit by way of the reversing valve, it makes a whooshing sound like freon is draining off, as far as the knocking noise, could be as I said in the beginning, might be low on freon, but it could be that, this particular unit does this, I have had units make some really strange noises in the past but functioned perfectly, hope this helped, please let us know, thanks again, mr.grzz
sounds like the compressor vibration dampers are wearing out. the dampers are the rubber washers that seperate the compressor from the chassis of the fridge. when they start to deteriorate, and the compressor kicks on, it will bounce against something in the chassis, causing a knocking noise.
Check the compressor mounts. They are usually springs mounted with rubber. If they are two loose the compessor wil hit some other metal part when starting up. Shakle it and see what it is hitting. Ajust accordingly.
