Can you rewind a sony 8mm tape manually? End of tape messed up and trying to get it rewound enough that it will finish

it sounds like you need to use the rewind option first to rewind the tape. If the tape isn't rewound, then you're unable to play it. And this might cause the eject issue that you're experiencing as well.

You have a clogged video head. It happens. Do not use the chamois again. Instead, purchase an 8mm head cleaner and give that a try. Only use a brand name cleaner - no generics, and make sure it doesn't come from China!

Try cleaning or replacing the mode switch.

Spring has stretched now Best get a new one.

this is caused by the tape winding too tightly so when it rewinds it gets tension and thinks it is at the end of tape ,so stops.

It pays to FF and REW several times on new or other peoples tapes to have the tape acclimatised to the tension on your machine. It may also need to be serviced if it is doing it to tapes you have previously FF to the end and rewound. Older tapes stretch a little more than new tapes so are more forgiving.

Did try disconnecting battery or AC adapter and wait a few minutes then install power and turn on .See if it will eject

You didnt write camera model and make. any how, you need Head Cleaning Cassette for your camera to clean its video heads. Video heads are dirty/ clogged so camera doesnt show picture in playback. Please dont touch video heads physicaly because it may broken easily. always use video head cleaning cassette.

It is normal. Sony is trying to get your tapes last longer.

Most VCR's will auto-rewind the tape when it gets to the end of a tape. Most will leave the tape in the unit assuming you may wish to view it again once rewound. Does the tape eject properly when you press the eject button? What does the manula say about the eject function?

try this:
some cameras have a memory where they begin make sure the memory is off or cleared then try to rewind or try fwd to end clear memory then rewind tape...

now sometime tapes of 120 are really not recommended because of the load of tape amd ost have a tension sensor 60m is usually the best recommended
