I am in the process of opening my above ground pool. I have a Hayward
Pro Series S180T4 sand filter. I noticed that the needle on the psi gauge reads 15 psi when the filter if off, and when I turn in on, the needle rises to 24 psi. Does the gauge need replacing or will the needle drop to zero eventually when the filter is not running?
It wouldn't hurt to replace the gauge every few years, since it makes contact with heavily chlorinated water. They are available for less than $10.

Your sand needs to be changed as it is clogged up with crud

The system still holds some pressure when the unit is off. It probably will decrease through time
