These were hard to fix when they were new in 1990, question:::: does it run and rev-up hi normally in neutral/park??? with a timing light does the distributor show full advance???you claim "CUTS-OUT", like back-firing ??you may need to test the COIL, TPS (throttle position sensor) and LOOM to isolate the cause,.. try those and let me know the outcome....GL

not knowing what trans you have ?? Thats why I said "neutral/park" sorry....assuming you checked or changed basic parts already...Fuel filter,plugs,etc.....it sound more like fuel, and possible "LOOM" (wire harness)... ck the fuel system from the tank to motor, I have found the rubber hoses seperate internally and restrict flow.and tank filter clogged..also ck loom connectors for corroided terminals, breaks, cracked insulator, etc .causing poor connection and hi resistance to injectors, ign., etc..which happens due to time and heat.....GL

My 1986 ford ranger 2.9 v6 engineafter driving for a while it sputters from gas and stalls.does it have (2) fuel pumps? 1 in the outside frame and 1 in the tank?

Yes there are two (2) fuel pumps on these pickups, one low pressure one in the tank that gets the fuel to the high pressure pump which is in the inside of the drivers frame rail beneath the cab towards the front of the cab.

When putting gas in my truck, 1990 Ford Ranger XLT 2.9, gas leaks from the upper portion of the tank

if you are sure the filler tube going to the tank is not leaking you would have to remove the tank to see whats going on=gas fumes extreely tricky you will hear a kind of woshing sound before the explosion.if you cant be very careful or dont have a good knowledge of this kind of repair take it to a repair shop.

I got a 1990 ford ranger 2.9 v6 its running very crappy

Fluctuating an high RPMs sounds like a leaking or missing vaccume hose to me, I had simmilar problem found open hole with hose off, replaced it now the RPMs are under 1000 again.
As for the stalling I also am having a simmilar problem, and am finding air in the fuel rail, I suspect the fuel pump is going.
I cant go more than a mile without problems.

1988 ford ranger 4 speed v6 problems keeping it running.

Fuel filter? There's also a filter on the suction intake inside the gas tank, it can get plugged up. I'd definitely try the filter if you haven't. Good luck. Have you checked the fuel psi coming from the tank? If it's fuel injection, it should be pretty high, 55 - 60 psi. Let me know if I can help.
