Hayward H Series Induced Draft Abg 100,000 Heater Logo
Anonymous Posted on Jul 06, 2009

My Hayward AG 100,000 btu heater ran well for the last two seasons. This season I hear a rattling type noise, and the hose that feeds the heater shakes at times. Other times the noise and shaking subside. The heater is functioning and supplying heat. In The Swim where I purchased it said make sure the heater is level. It was was off by a 1/2 inch and I brought it back to level. It worked initially, but later in the day the heater re fired and the symptoms were back. I just got a call from one of Haywards platinum techs, and he said it sounds like it could be the heat exchanger. He said take the supply hose off, and with a pair of needle nose pliers try to slide the metal plate out of the way as the water could be restricted by the plate causing the noise. Any suggestions as to the symptoms and or advice given by the tech ??

That plate should not move at all. If it is moving is is damaged. In the past that meant replacing the heat exchanger but I recently had someone tell me they took theirs to a radiator shop that tach welded the plate in place and it works fine now. Either way, the rattle is from water boiling in the unit due to poor flow through the heat excahnger. The plate we are talking about is what controls that flow.

Testimonial: "John, is the diverter plate supposed to be welded in the up or down position on the inlet side ? The outlet side looks like the down position. "

Do you have a pre-start checklist?

Pre-start checklist?

I assume the heater ran fine last season. If so, assume it will run fine this season. Simply remove the top cover, check the combustion chamber area for signs of visitors such as mice, wasps, dirt dobbers, etc. Remove debris.

We always drain the old fuel & start fresh.

Replace the top cover and fire it up. If it runs fine then leave it alone. If it won't continue to run troubleshoot and find the problem.

My heater ran for four hours then I smelled something burning and there was smole coming out of the vent...what could cause this?

Nests inside the heater, or build up of soot on the heat exchanger. You should always have your heater serviced each year at the onset of heater season.
