As far as I know, the autofocus (AF) light is needed only in lower light conditions to illuminate the subject.
You may not be able to rely on it working without having good light available so you should try some shots in poorer light to see if it is really not working before depending on having in-focus snaps.
If you don't use it in low light conditions, you may not miss it.

After the basics, try dropping the camera on a carpeted area from about 2-3 feet. It worked for my Fuji A500 and 90% of the responders on the link.Everything on the web said it would cost ~$100 to fix.I was in the process of researching new cameras to buy and had nothing to lose by dropping it on the floor.
The error may be caused by debris in the zoom mechanism preventing it from working.Dropping the camera loosens the debris and voila!
camera needs new shutter switch .If you can repair yourself and save $$$ .A few outside screws and new switch just plugs in ..new switch is an improved part #147724313 order at sony.com ..goodluck
This sounds like mirror box motor problem ( see enclosed shot from our workshop ) : this cocks the shutter and controls mirror mechanism and when the drive dosnt work properly ( small nylon gear on the motor goes ) camera will develop the the sort of problems you describe. Can be repaired but will cost $ 150-200 so it is relatively expensive repair.
